featuring the ken cathcart photographic collection c: 1935-1958

A proprietary and never before seen photo collection of 3200 images documenting and creating a visual record of 20th century SF and its residents, through the eyes of San Francisco historian, mapmaker, and photographer Kenneth Gwin Cathcart c. 1902–1985.

Support documentation created by Schein & Schein assists in the visual continuity and supports the ideas, conversations, and philosophy of the photographic imagery. Additional photographic and ephemera images have been included from a variety of sources. We will make additions until 2025 as part of a greater project.

Cathcart used these photographs in support of historic maps made between 1946 and 1958 under the banner "Historic Maps" by Ken Cathcart. 7 maps exist today.

Schein & Schein presents the photographic record here and will create re-issues of these great maps over the next few years, with a new book to explain the full context of each of these amazingly well researched maps of Old SF, Chinatown, Early Buildings of the 1850s SF, California Gold Country, the Bay Area, SF Volunteer Firemen and Engines, and SF Cable Car design history.

The photos are here for free public viewing and polite input while still being researched and used for our needs in the creation of the re-issue maps and books for each map, thus ALL images have been uploaded and editing has NOT transpired. There are still mistakes and unknowns in locations. Any corrections and input from the public are welcome.
